I have watched the new VH-1 show, The Pick Up Artist, with interest. My husband raises his eyes at this – but I tell him I have to it’s part of my job. (An argument I make often… but I’m sticking to it!)
The gist of this one is a guy named Eric who calls himself Mystery and says he’s the “world’s most successful pick up artist.” Well… you’ve gotta have a hook I guess. Mystery believes women have “attraction switches.” (We never knew this about ourselves, did we ladies?) Mystery is working with eight social misfits who compete on challenges, and like most reality shows, one goes home each week.
My favorite contestant is Joe D. He says he has a hard time making the switch from friends to more than friends. (And is it just me or does this kid look exactly like the Star Wars Kid that was all over YouTube a few years ago?
So this thing is going to go on for eight weeks. On first reflection, I have to say there’s something sweet and innocent about these guys. When Mystery asks about “the virgin” status, I see their embarrassment and awkwardness and yet hopefulness. It is this hope that they hold in their hearts that makes me feel a bit protective. I’ll be watching with interest to see who gets voted off each week.
