Welcome to Unmarried and Single Americans Week (September 16-22, 2007).
“National Singles Week” was started by the Buckeye Singles Council in Ohio in the 1980s to celebrate single life and recognize singles and their contributions to society.
Singles today have so many choices, and people today are waiting longer than ever to get married. Some singles choose not to marry, while others are looking but someone but are still content to enjoy their life unattached.
I waited a long time to get married, also. It wasn’t that I didn’t want to get hitched and have a family, it’s just that I wasn’t about to settle for something that wasn’t right. It’s hard to end a relationship that’s “okay” in favor of the hope that something will come along that is perfect for you. But I did that many times, and today I can tell you that I’m glad I did.
I also know that sometimes it’s hard to be a single. There are many confusing things about relationships like emotional affairs, physical cheating, keeping love strong… that knock singles off their guard and leave them wondering about the person they are with. Or sometimes it’s a matter of finding the right person… knowing where to look or how to approach them. I know all this because I’ve been there and because many of you write me with these concerns.
I hope you will continue to do so.
And in the meantime, celebrate Unmarried and Single Americans Week!
