A recent study conducted by Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences concluded that men go for looks when it comes to choosing women. And women were even choosier when it came to picking their partners.
I highly disagree with this, and I’ll tell you why in a minute. First, here’s how their “experiment” was done:
Okay, so they used speed dating to determine what types of mates we all go for? Speed dating. Right.
While speed dating is a great way for singles to meet a batch of new people in one sitting, even the most diehard speed daters will tell you that in order for REAL attraction to take place, you’ve got to get to know someone.
We’ve all seen it. A cute guy or girl comes in the door and we’re instantly attracted. Then, they open they mouth for a minute and we think “Eeesh.” And we are no longer attracted enough to want to go out with them.
Whereas, there might be a not-so-great looking guy or girl that doesn’t immediately catch our attention, but after spending a few minutes with them we’re suddenly intrigued. We want to know more. We find them witty or funny and then… hey, we’re attracted.
Speed dating is a great introduction. But can it really be an accurate form of research?
