Match.com TV Commercials

Creepy? Or Engaging?

Match.com has a great brand, but what do you think about the latest run of commercials?

Have you guys seen the TV commercials for Match.com lately? Those black and white, kind of creepy shots of people doing odd things, followed by the tagline:

  • “It’s okay to look.”

For the life of me, I do not get how this is supposed to attract people to their site. First of all, showing people doing funky things kind of confirms the impressions (and not necessary founded, but still) some of us have with Internet dating, which is that there are nothing but freaks and weirdoes out there!

Now, of course that isn’t true! I can attest that the folks “out there” for the most part are just nice people who haven’t met their true love yet. I did Internet dating and met a lot of really sweet guys.

But these commercials? I’m glad they weren’t out when I was online.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m all for trying something new with advertising. I’m a marketing girl myself and love when the folks at Madison Avenue get it right. I’m the first one to appreciate creativity in promotion… but I’m wondering how they came up with this ad campaign?

I mean… were some guys just sitting in a room saying, “Okay, so what we’re going to do is show people as they really are. Like…. if you’ve got kind of a creepy pet and you dress weird, I mean, why hide it? Let’s SHOW people that so they’ll want to see who else is on our system, man!”

Or not.

Listen, Match has been around for a while and they've got a great brand. They’re one of the top sites and they get hundreds of thousands of singles together each year.

But not with these commercials.
