Competition For a Guy's Attention

When You're Shy - Can You Still Compete?

I’ve been watching the TV show Age of Love and it’s got me thinking about how women sometimes compete for a man’s attention.

On a recent episode of Age of Love, the 40-something Lynn got eliminated because she was basically a bit shy and Mark couldn’t get to know her. I could definitely relate!

In my opinion, the competition on Age of Love is my worst nightmare when it comes to dating! And yet sometimes, putting ourselves out there so someone can actually become interested is a necessary evil. I knew if a guy were going to get to know me that I would have to move out of my bookworm encased shell or he’d quickly move on to the flirty girls with the laugh and hair twirl. I often felt like the dork you see in movies, pushing her glasses up on her nose while the pretty but ditzy chick makes off with the hot guy.

To make matters worse, I lived with a girl who LOVED competing for the attention of a guy. She could be passed out, hair stuck to the bar, and yet able to perk up instantly at the first whiff of a guy saying hello to me. She would saddle over, giggle, make sure her breasts gave the right amount of jiggle and then hang on him until he paid her attention.

And once he became interested in her, she was done with him.

I guess she wasn’t looking for love so much as adoration. The whole process of having to be “more” engaging than her seemed to exhaust me. As a result, I’d give up entirely and move on to something else. I noticed Lynn doing this a bit on the show and I feel for her. But she’s gorgeous and has a ton going for her, so I can’t help thinking that even though Mark isn’t the one for her, she will meet someone that is!
