Age and Love

Does a Generation Gap Help or Hurt a Relationship?

Is the May-December relationship a realistic one? Can older women really compete with younger ones?

I’ve been thinking about age and how it relates to love lately. Perhaps tonight’s conclusion of TV’s Age of Love has brought the subject to the forefront of my mind. Or maybe it was the book I just read, Gilead, in which the main character is married to a woman years his junior.

I know it’s not just me. I’ve receive questions from people asking about this subject as well. It’s perfectly reasonable that people are talking about it. The trends of the last few years have changed dramatically with the traditional “May/December” romance. After all, Demi and Ashton are STILL married as of this writing!

I have some thoughts on the subject, of course. I think like any relationship it really depends on the two people involved. I was involved with an older guy for a long time. Still, when I look back, I probably knew we weren’t going to last forever.

So it begs the question: Will age difference in a relationship hurt or hinder it? Is age another hurdle that one partner needs to get over? Or is it something that makes things spicier, more interesting? Can it ever truly work? I’m always interested to hear your thoughts. In the meantime, let’s watch the conclusion of Age of Love with interest tonight as Mark chooses. Will it be kitten or cougar?
