Forget candy and flowers this year. Give that special someone a creative token of affection.

No matter how long you and your mate been together, finding just the right present for your girlfriend or boyfriend can be a challenging prospect. Here are some great gift ideas to help you out.

Give Something to Enjoy For Years to Come

While a dozen red roses are nice, why not give your partner a rose bush instead? The two of you can nurture the plant throughout the winter, then plant it in the ground once warm weather arrives. Each time your partner looks outside, he or she will think of your thoughtful gift.

Give your sweetie a digital photo key chain like this one from Red Envelope. The key chain holds 60 photos, so get creative and find the best shots of the two of you over the years. Mix spontaneous and posed photos for a living slide show.

Make a picture clock using small photos of the two of you in place of the numbers. Clock kits can be found inexpensively at the hardware or craft store.

Document Memories of Your Relationship

Make a scrapbook commemorating high points of your relationship. Gather any receipts, coasters, matchbook covers, and pictures to place on craft paper. Document details of the most special moments of your relationship by writing a few thoughts to include on the page alongside other memorabilia.

Create a mix tape. Choose songs that represent various memories of your relationship and copy them to one CD. Use a label maker to create the cover for the CD, and don’t forget to include the date on the front.

Build a shadow box that contains mementos from a favorite time the two of you have spent together. Your shadow box could represent a movie or dinner you both enjoyed. Or, you could pull items from a trip or other fond memory. Find a quote that describes your feeling and hand-write a stanza on velum to include in the box.

Bake Something Sweet

Give a little homemade goodness to your mate. Bake cookies or a cake shaped into a heart. Decorate to mimic the look of a candy heart and write your own special message on each with frosting gel.

If your partner has a sweet tooth, bake giant kiss cookies. Add your own special message to personalize the gift even more. Place in a pretty tin or box to complete the gesture.

A Thoughtful Gift Doesn't Have to Be Expensive

Recreate your first date. Meet at the same place and reminisce about the things you did, food you ordered, and how nervous you were. Don’t forget to talk about how you felt upon seeing your partner for the first time or when you kissed good night.

Craft a simple yet beautiful collection of crayon hearts to display in the window. This design can be found on Martha Stewart’s website. Your girlfriend or boyfriend will surely appreciate the effort put forth to create this colorful arrangement.

Low on funds? Write letters to each other that describe how you feel about one another. Include unique things such as your partner’s hobbies, likes, and habits that made you fall in love with him or her. Remember that a great gift doesn’t have to cost a lot of money, but it does have to be well thought out.
