Even though your finances are tapped-out because of the holidays, you can still have a romantic Valentine's Day.

Christmas and New Year’s have just ended and already Valentine’s Day treats and cards are in the stores. It doesn’t take long for one holiday to end and another special occasion to begin. And, it’s never too soon to plan for Valentine’s Day. However, after the credit card statement comes in the mail after Christmas, it doesn’t leave many options to celebrate Valentine’s Day in a romantic way. Or, does it?

Flowers, chocolate, jewelry, dinner. Where does it end? Don’t worry, your Valentine’s Day can still be great—you just have to think of some practical, inexpensive ideas that are still special. On this list, you won’t find hot air balloon rides, mini-getaways, or expensive dinners. What you will find are budget-friendly ideas for a special Valentine’s Day.

1) Baking Who doesn’t love baking? Bring out the flour and sugar and whip up some heart shaped sugar cookies. They can be decorated with pink icing and sent to your loved one at work or home.

2) Dinner at Home This is a no-brainer. If you prepare lasagna the night before, all you need to do is throw it in the oven. Serve it with bread and a bottle of wine, light some candles, play soft music and you are on your way to a beautiful night.

3) Massage A gift of massage done by you is a sweet treat without the calories. Buy some massage oils, add ambiance with some candles, music and scents, and oooh la la.

4) Poem Writing something from the heart will move your partner, touching him or her in different ways. It doesn’t even need to rhyme, just as long as it’s your feelings straight from the heart.

5) Story This is a bit more time-consuming, but worth it. Write a romance about you and your loved one, it can be sweet to racy. There are no rules here; it’s whatever is right for your relationship.

6) Appetizers by the fireplace or faux fireplace Prepare a platter of food that will enhance the mood. Strawberries and chocolate, oysters, cheese, sausage, other fruit and chocolate, more chocolate, other sweets and pastries. If no one likes chocolate, fruit and whipped cream are good options. All these things can be prepared the night before. Save the clean up for the next day. Light the fireplace or play the DVD of the faux fireplace.

It doesn’t take much to make Valentine’s Day extraordinary. The important thing that makes it a successful and memorable night is that you made the effort to make someone feel special.
