Stuck for gift ideas this Valentine's Day? Here are some useful do's and don'ts to keep in mind when purchasing a present for the man in your life.

When buying Valentine’s Day presents for a significant other, females appear to get the hard wrap. Fallback options that are available to their male counterparts – flowers, jewellery, perfume and the like – are not so widely acceptable, nor so amply appreciated as a football match, twelve-pack of beer or sexy red lingerie set to ogle.

So what is the key to selecting perfect gifts for guys on February 14th?

When setting out on this special shopping spree, it is essential that you keep realistic and refrain from being swept away in the consumer-driven romance. Whilst that ‘I love you’ teddy bear or life-sized Cupid may make for an interesting attraction, after approximately five seconds of enjoyment, it will no doubt leave you with a bulky bag, horrified boyfriend and significantly reduced bank balance. Not a good way to start the year.

Keeping this tip in mind, make sure to refrain from the impulse purchase of framed loved declarations, flashing ties, love heart candies, bright pink T-shirts, matching necklaces, cupie dolls, singing telegrams, helium balloons and any other item preceded by the word ‘novelty’. They will not be appreciated as much as you may have expected.

Gizmos and Gadgets

A sure-fire way to interest any red-blooded male is to purchase a new-fangled gizmo or gadget that suits their specific tastes. From skimping on the remote control to going out and grabbing the whole wide-screen TV, this gift can be adapted to suit any budget or relationship level.

Possible options for the gizmo-centred guy include a universal remote, power tools, an instant cell phone charger, digital camera, hand-held DVD player or Apple Ipod complete with all of their favourite songs.

GPS navigation may also be a possible gift idea this Valentine’s Day, providing the added bonus of significantly reducing future road trip arguments. After all, no guy likes having to ask for directions.

Jewellery

Purchasing jewellery for your significant other will always be a delicate process. Whilst the right selection may be thoughtful and classy, the smallest error in judgement will no doubt result in a barely concealed expression of horror on the face of your significant other. For your best bet, steer clear of purchasing a necklace, earrings, bracelet, anklet or other delicate chain.

If your heart is truly set on accessorising your Valentine, stick with a designer watch or pair of simple and elegant cufflinks to improve your chances of success.

Tickets and Events

Buying tickets to an event or festival is a sure-fire way to please even the fussiest of men in your life. The most important thing here is to make a selection based on the interests of your Valentine, as opposed to focusing on your own preference. There are very few guys who will appreciate exclusive tickets to a Celine Dion concert.

Whilst sports events are typically a safe bet, it’s important to plan ahead and get in early to purchase the best seats possible. Just remember, the better the game, the happier the guy, the more likely you are to get what you want.
