In my last article, we examined the elements that combine to convey the message in an in-person communication.
What are the rules regarding communication over the phone & via e-mail?
Hopefully many of you are beginning to re-think other elements of your communication. In addition to our word choice, or what we say, our tone of voice, body language and facial expressions also say a lot.
86% of the message conveyed or understood in a phone conversation comes from our voice tone, or how we say what we say. Tone of your voice changes and conveys a completely different message even when saying the same word.
A mere 14% of the meaning understood over the phone comes from our word choice. This is why in long-distance relationships it's so critical to watch that voice tone. If you're tired or irritated because of work that day, make sure that annoyed tone doesn't creep in when you speak to your partner or significant other.
For e-mail all we really have is word choice and how we organize our thoughts. Do you engage in small talk that doesn't pack much of a punch or have much meaning or do you get right to it and say what you mean so your message isn't buried in too many paragraphs?
I welcome your thoughts and examples on this; feel free to a href="mailto:datting@suite101.com".Email me and show me what you mean!
