Red roses and candy top the lists of Valentine's Day gifts, however, try writing a love letter or poem filled with famous love quotes to add a special intimate touch.

After all, it was a poem written in the 14th century that started Valentine’s Day. Geoffrey Chaucher’s "Parliament of Fouls" is one of the first references to the idea that St. Valentine's Day was a special day for lovers.

The poem finds the narrator dreaming as he passes through a beautiful landscape and a dark temple to the bright sunlight. Mother Nature watches over a large block of bird gathered to choose their mates. The birds have a parliamentary debate while three male eagles try to seduce a female.

Chaucer’s Middle English poetry may be a bit of tough model to follow. Instead, use his inspiration of using words of love to express yourself. First, think of a breathtaking place you have visited - perhaps a crisp walk in the woods where snowbirds chirped, a sunset that completed a perfect day on the beach or a field of manicured flowers last summer that caught your eye.

Describe this scene as you open your love letter or poem. Then, use a smattering of love quotes to deepen your message. Some of these will have your sweetheart melting with love:

"When you are in Love you can't fall asleep because reality is better than your dreams" - Dr. Seuss. Find other inspirational love quotes like this at great-quotes.com.

“The best thing about me is you" - Shannon Crown, also found at great-quotes.com.

"I love thee, I love but thee/With a love that shall not die/Till the sun grows cold/And the stars grow old" - William Shakespeare. The Bard is a wonderful source for your love letters. The best site for his love poetry is found at romancestuck.com/quotes/shakespeare-quotes.htm

"Love doesn't make the world go round, love is what makes the ride worthwhile" - Elizabeth Browning. Check out other inspirational love quotes at the official website of poet Elizabeth Browning, browningsociety.org.

Another effective love letter or poem may begin with you recalling a funny experience you shared. Was your special moment together marked by an idyllic surrounding, a quick laugh together at a shared scene during a movie or when you held hands during a simply shopping trip?

Then, try using some of these more humorous and lighthearted quotes to fill out your ideas:

"Love is when your puppy licks your face even after you left him alone all day' - Anonymous child (check out other cute love quotes from children)

"Love is being stupid together" - French Poet Paul Valery, found at thinkexist.com.

For those you who have enjoyed a long, or even shorter, marriage, Valentine's Day is also a time to writer a love letter or poem just to refresh your emotional connection or to remind your love of the lifelong commitment. Better yet, try using some of these fast and funny quotes in your written words to your love:

"I love being married. It's so great to find one special person you want to annoy for the rest of your life" - Comedian Rita Rudner

"Never go to bed mad - stay up and fight" - Comedian Phyllis Diller. You can find other quotes like those by Rita Rudner and Phyllis Diller at brainyquote.com.
