Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday is a perfect opportunity for new couples to cement their relationship by planning extra, but not unlimited, time together.

What does a new couple do on President's Day? Aside from the true significance of such a holiday,, the secondary impact on a dating couple is that such events usually fall on a Monday or a Friday, creating the opportunity for a long weekend. As the designated social planner, a woman can suggest, usually two or three weeks in advance, a weekend getaway. Otherwise, a woman runs the risk of wasting perfectly good, free, quality time that she can spend with her boyfriend building emotional equity towards a committed relationship.

Why It’s Up to the Woman to Plan Dates

Left to his own devices a man may vegetate on his couch or in front of his computer on an extra day off. It’s up to the woman to bring some fresh air and some fun into his life and into mutual times together. If a woman doesn’t do it, it may not get done. And if a couple spends all their time lolling on the couch, it’s boring. The only thing worse than not getting along with a boyfriend, is not caring about the quality of the relationship. Don’t settle for mediocre. Get him out of the house. In the end, he’s going to appreciate his girlfriend’s initiative and discover that such time together is worth celebrating with or without the holiday.

Where Does a Prospective Couple Go on Their Long Weekend?

It’s not necessary to fly to Las Vegas, although that would be fun. Renting a little hotel room at the beach, near a local theme park, or a campground are all options that give twosomes time to have fun and to create memories.

If no one can spare the time for a weekend getaway, be sure to make a special date for the third weekend in January. There is usually a parade, live music, memorial dedications and educational events and speeches. Plan to attend these events, perhaps bringing a picnic lunch or supper along.

Wrapping Up the Holiday Weekend

In the early stages of a relationship, plan an event, attend it, and then everyone goes home. Just lounging at each other’s house dissipates the impact of a really good date or weekend. There is time for that later, when the relationship has blossomed. In the beginning, nurture each other’s company, don’t drown in it.

Couples, women especially, often make the mistake of lingering when the weekend is over. The objective for a couples get away or a holiday gala is always to have a good time and to create happy memories. Allow these memories time to imprint by dropping him off on the way home with a fervent kiss and a brisk goodbye.
